Whatever the validity of this or that theory, the earth will not remain as it is now. From its beginnings as a chunk of molten rock and gas some 4.5 billion years ago, the planet has seen continents form, move together and drift apart like jigsaw-puzzle pieces. Successive ice ages have sent glaciers creeping down from the polar caps. Mountain ranges have jutted up from ocean beds, and landmasses have disappeared beneath the waves...
...allegory is quietly at work here. But it is a form of generalization, and the greatness of this film derives, finally, from its specificity. Pelle is rich in characters and subplots, and as the seasons turn, they intersect, diverge and intersect again, forming a rough, wonderfully textured weave, unlike anything one is used to brushing against in the modern cinema. The boy's chief tormentor is a trainee manager, an arrogant ninny. The figure Pelle most admires, because his courage contrasts so vividly with Lasse's discouragement, is the farm's resident revolutionist, risking all, losing all (in the film...
...shortly after 3 a.m. last Wednesday, party members grudgingly capitulated to Shamir's proposal to form another national-unity government with the Labor Party. Shamir had vowed to give up his mandate to form a government if he lost. Seven weeks of wrangling followed inconclusive elections on Nov. 1, but the U.S. decision to open a dialogue with the Palestine Liberation Organization precipitated Israel's warring leaders into a second consecutive government of opposing...
...most popular form of population control in developing countries is sterilization. Some 98 million women and 35 million men around the world have resorted to that permanent solution. The other current mainstay is abortion, which the Worldwatch Institute's Brown called "a reflection of unmet family- planning needs." An estimated 28 million abortions are performed in Third World nations annually, and an additional 26 million in industrial countries. About half are illegal...
Arafat is another story. He and his confederates have raised double-talk to an art form. Seeming concessions have become traps, hard-line interviews in Arabic have contradicted hopeful statements in English, renunciations of terrorist acts have been undermined by evidence suggesting Arafat's support for their undertaking. Even recently, when the diplomatic grapevine has been alive with speculation that the P.L.O. would finally recognize Israel's right to exist, Arafat's closest associates have telegraphed a different stance: continued adherence to a "phased strategy" whose odious goal is Israel's eventual liquidation...
