...between 1910 and 1970 the dynamics of reading and writing have changed. Few people read habitually now-movies and T.V. provide a far more effortless escape to fill lonely nights. Reading literature is a form of active self-exploration. Unlike the movies, books demand immense concentration and visual inventiveness. There is a constant interplay between the page and wandering mind of the reader. Often he will look up entirely and lapse into a reverie suggested by the text. Each year since 1924, TIME's Business section has in one form or another taken its own look at the U.S. economy in the year just ending and in the year ahead. This week's cover story concentrates on the economy's two main worries: inflation and the possibility of recession. But her vehement put-down of men sticks more strongly in one's mind: "Like the tyrannosaurus, man is blocking evolution.... Until he gives up existence, there will be no relief from suffering nor any moral progress on this planet." She is smiling slightly, we hope, even though her tone is grim. But she is serious...
