There's a new epic form of movies: the documentary. There, and not in most Hollywood narratives, is where you find huge issues and outsize personalities. Truth isn't always stranger than a Marvel comics movie, but it's often more complex and compelling. If nonfiction can outsell novels on the best-seller lists, and 60 Minutes stay near the top of the TV ratings for 40 years, why can't real stories on the movie screen seem more vivid than invented ones...
...that Sen. Edward Kennedy, 76, of Massachusetts might suffer a stroke. Last October, they operated on the carotid artery on the left side of Kennedy's neck to clear the plaque that was building up inside it. The concern: that some of that arterial plaque might break off and form a clot in the Senator's brain, interrupting the flow of blood to his cerebrum. After the operation, he was probably also given aspirin or other medications to thin his blood and decrease the risk that he would form a clot...
...because many other wealthy countries already have such systems. Figuring out exactly how to make universal health care work in the U.S. is a matter better left to its own lengthy magazine article. But if you're looking for big economic change from the next Administration, this is the form it's most likely to take...
When Frank first shopped his photos around, no American publisher wanted anything to do with them, so they first appeared in book form in France in 1958. One year later a U.S. edition was brought out by Grove Press, the combative imprint that had published Lady Chatterley's Lover, Tropic of Cancer and Naked Lunch. The Grove edition came with an introduction by no less a hipster than Jack Kerouac. Whatever you think of his feverish prose ("The charging restless mute unvoiced road keening in a seizure of tarpaulin power ..."), in one lovely line Kerouac got the book just right...
