Inevitably a virgin is seduced (twice in fact it's so funny) and a teetotalling bar-smasher gets roaring drunk, but this particular show extends its faithfulness to formula a bit too far. Individual lines like "you boys couldn't flatten out a wrinkled postage stamp" ring a little hollow. I wondered during the first act whether the show would stoop to the Beach Party level of repartee with one character emphatically commenting "You can say that again," and his buddy really saying it again. It was there all right, a little dressed up, but dismally there all the same...
...originally a mathematician an engineer. His chief artistic interest was for many years the Japanese theater, perhaps the most stylized of all artistic representations. And in Potemkin Eisenstein made one of the few triumphs within the prescribed Marxist form. Potemkin does not deviate one iota from the social realism formula. It is propaganda, and yet it is compelling. It transcends its message and endures not just as a chapter in art history, but as a still fascinating work...
Obviously, if community action organizations were to represent the interests of the poor, then the poor themselves would have to participate in their formation--hence the famous formula for maximum feasible participation of community residents in all phases of community action programs. Moynihan points out rather interestingly that this formula entered the War on Poverty draft legislation not out of considerations of big city politics, but rather as a device to ensure that community action funds would reach the black poor in the South rather than their white overlords. whatever its origins, however, maximum feasible participation soon became the kingpin...
...Laing's formula for human fulfillment--the discovery of whole experience through voyages into inner space--is closely related to qualities which two modern psychological thinkers have identified as feminine. Erik Erikson, in "Womanhood and the Inner Space," organizes female identity around the concept of a productive inner space. He attributes to women and artistically gifted men an inner life, a sensitive indwelling and inwardness. Robert Lifton in "Women as Knower" attributes to women an insight which is related to their close identification with organic life and "whole experience," organic knowledge is essentially phenomenological, resolving an awareness of the selfprocess...
Raising the Roof. Damning the situation as "unfair and in many cases outrageous," Mayor John Lindsay has demanded a rollback of the "exorbitant" rent increases and a freeze on further boosts until March 1. By then, he warns, the city's landlords had better produce a formula for self-regulation against gouging or they will face legislated controls. The owners are expected to come through with some sort of plan-and for good reason. With an election due in the autumn, Democrats on the city council are threatening the landlords with a number of politically popular bills, including...
