Inspiring and thrilling as is the record of American college men in the present world struggle, it is yet not so moving as that made by the colleges of our allies. The universities of Canada have sent forth a far greater proportion of their graduates than have the colleges and universities of this country, and a greater proportion of them have been killed. The University of Toronto, for instance, contributed about 5,400 men from students' bench and professors' chair, of whom 604 gave up their lives, or somewhat more than 10 per-cent. ...series of articles discussing various plans for the Harvard Memorial is appearing from time to time in issues of the CRIMSON. A different plan is set forth in a communication in the Alumni Bulletin, which proposes that the Harvard Endowment Fund be changed into a Harvard Memorial Fund. But such a plan seems undesirable for it would commercialize the spirit of commemoration which should be the key note of the final memorial. Time alone will determine whether any of the plans under consideration will be selected, but the CRIMSON will be glad to publish any criticism or any new suggestions...
Since his arrival here last February Colonel Goetz, working in the seclusion of the Military Office, has perfected plans for the Field Artillery Unit to be established here next fall. Laboring under the handicap of the bad reputation of the S. A. T. C., he set forth, a short time ago, comprehensive plans for the future R. O. T. C., which, if they materialize, will undoubtedly prove of great value to the University. ...next statement is amazing. The "specialists" for this army--machine gunners, engineers, and so forth--are to be formed from a nucleus of regulars in case of emergency. Are the lessons of the recent war forgotten? The Regular Army took five months to "expand" and to whip recruits into shape. But human nature is ever optimistic. Next time we hope we will do better...
