June is the month for marriage. Fortnight ago the United Presbyterians and Northern Presbyterians joined (TIME, June 24), and this week in Cleveland the Congregational Christian Churches (membership: 1,342,000) and the Evangelical and Reformed Church (membership: 775,000) merged to become the United Church of Christ. The merger has been 17 years in the making. Some Congregationalists, e.g., the Cadman Memorial Church in Brooklyn, were so chary of losing their precious local autonomy in the merger with the E. & R. presbytery system that they sued to prevent the union, but lost. Says the Rev. Dr. James E. Wagner...
...these shows, the U.S. has rung up priceless good will by unveiling the wares that symbolize its way of life to 40 million fair visitors in 27 countries. The 3,000 U.S. companies that contributed their goods also signed up millions of dollars in sales. Over the last fortnight, at Poland's Poznan Fair, the first U.S. trade exhibit behind the Iron Curtain pulled in 900,000 Poles, far more than the Russian display (TIME, June 24). Spurred by this dramatic propaganda success, President Eisenhower last week requested $2,200,000 for the U.S. to enter next summer...
Prospects are far brighter for oil. Buried under the desert, in three areas 280 miles to 800 miles south of Algiers, are proved reserves of 3.5 billion bbl. and possible reserves of 7 billion bbl. Eight wells are already operating, and a new one was brought in a fortnight ago. Some of the crude is pure enough to power a diesel engine without being refined. A huge natural gas field also was struck 700 miles due south of Algiers...
...generation, for whom the horrors of the civil war are only stories, has begun to fight bitterly against the dictator in student riots and strikes. So concerned was Franco that during the past fortnight his ubiquitous secret police arrested more than a dozen men, mostly young, of good families which earlier supported the Caudillo. Among them were some big names: Millionaire Basque Businessman Antonio Menchaca Careaga, Lawyer Valentin López Aparicio, University Student Ignacio Soleto, nephew of Liberal Leader Dionisio Ridruejo (Franco's propaganda director during the civil war), and Francisco Herrera Oria, widely known liberal Catholic layman...
General Strike? Grim warnings against Lechín's course were sprinkled all through a detailed report released by Stabilizer Eder last fortnight. He cautioned that the "miracles" of stabilization could be wiped out by a round of raises now. He caustically criticized the law that bars firing of surplus employees. In the last five years, said Eder, the number of workers in the government-run mines increased 20% while production dropped 50%. The report's blunt summary said that if Bolivians expect U.S. aid to continue at its present level (about one-third the government budget...
