Sometimes you have to travel to a wine's home in order to understand its character. Last fall, after the harvest in Italy, I stood atop the ruined fortress that looms over the ancient town of Montalcino, the birthplace of Brunello, just 25 miles southeast of Siena. From the fortress, I devoured the panoramic view of the Tuscan countryside. In the distance, the grapevine leaves were as colorful as New England's best in October. Clumps of olive trees and upright cypresses were shadowed by the brooding Mount Amiata. The whole ambiance was distilled in the Brunello I was drinking...

...feels angry at and resentful of the U.S.'s arrogance and actions in the Middle East. And all nations feel more vulnerable since the U.S. used the big stick, rather than the economic carrot, to beat Iraq into submission. If Krauthammer took the time to talk to people outside fortress America, he would find a very different worldview. As new immigrants in 1972 who wanted to live...

Today the Gush Katif bloc of settlements is a fortress under siege, a surreal mix of suburbia and security. The tight skein of roads in the area, restricted to Israelis, run through barren no-go zones where every tree and plant and dwelling has been bulldozed for a hundred yards. Thriving hothouses and comfortable red-roofed villas set in lush, green gardens spread across the dunes, huddling inside rings of razor wire and electric fence. Three-story military watchtowers draped in camouflage rear up out of back gardens, and tanks patrol the perimeters. The only Palestinians allowed within view...

...Springsteen and a couple of pals made a midnight pilgrimage out to Graceland, where rock's first real King still dwelled. Outside those gates, a certain madness took hold. The Boss wanted to meet Elvis, and he made a sudden, sprung-loose, solo commando raid on the sacred fortress. He was grabbed and turned back, and it was then, as he still likes to tell it, that he cashed in all his chips. "I'm Bruce Springsteen!" he yelled. "I was on the cover of TIME! The cover of Newsweek! I got an album, Born...
