...army, which long was almost the sole national institution to remain generally above the confessional conflict. Now it is being split into antagonistic Moslem and Christian factions. Hundreds of Moslem soldiers deserted and took over army garrisons. Among them was Beaufort Castle-a massive stone fortress built 900 years ago by French Crusaders -which is within artillery range of settlements inside Israel. Many of the deserting Moslem troops were believed to be sympathetic to the Palestinian guerrillas, and there were fears last week that they might fire across the border-thereby provoking a strong Israeli retaliation that could easily spark...

From the outside, the new home of Britain's National Theater looks like a concrete cubist fortress. Yet, looking out from its wide cantilevered terraces, one might be on the bridge of an ocean liner. Scanning the Thames from its South Bank, one sees the helmeted dome of St. Paul's to the right, and on the left, the smoothly scalloped arches of Waterloo Bridge. Within the building, the staggered lobby levels form spacious coves of unanticipated intimacy, soon to be thronged with hosts of theatergoers...

The onion domes and crosses atop the Kremlin's cathedrals and churches coruscated in the winter sunlight, while the renovated brick battlements of the ancient fortress loomed over the elegant imperial palaces, freshly painted in pastels. Outside the walls of the ancient fortress, huge posters dominated Red Square, proclaiming the principal theme of this year's political extravaganza: SUCh as GLORY TO THE GREAT SOVIET PEOPLE, THE BUILDERS OF COMMUNISM. More than 5,000 party...

...Emperor of Atlantis resembles another expressionist work, Kurt Weill's Seven Deadly Sins, but it goes beyond Weill's elegant cynicism. The final chorale, describing death as part of life's "delight and woe," is sung to A Mighty Fortress Is Our God, while the orchestra counters with a cabaret tune of incredibly sweet pathos. From this juxtaposition emerges a requiem for a civilization literally going up in smoke, but the hymn's chords reassert the promise of redemptive life...
