...should Rosemary's Baby be any good? A facile author thinks it would be fun to put a coven of witches in the Dakota (a fortress-like New York apartment house), writes a best seller, and sells it to Paramount which hires a fashionable director for a small fortune to make the movie. It's a sure-fire success formula--not exactly a sublime collaboration of great artists, let alone unusually talented craftsmen. Rosemary's Baby, then, would be easy to dismiss as a slack and inadequate thriller were it not for everyone's desire to take Polanski seriously...
Satan-May-Care. As Rosemary Woodhouse, she and her husband Guy (John Cassavetes) are delighted to find an apartment in the Branford, a penumbral old fortress of an apartment house on Manhattan's Central Park West, modeled on the real-life Dakota at 1 West 72nd Street (where some of the exterior scenes were shot). Rosemary's bookish old father figure, Hutch (Maurice Evans), is not too pleased; the Branford, he notes, has an unsavory history of suicides and diabolical doings, including the murder of a notorious Satanist...
...Directions. To Westmoreland, the Tet attacks on 40 cities were Giap's desperate gamble to draw allied troops away from the beleaguered U.S. Marine fortress at Khe Sanh. He still believes the onslaughts on Saigon are in the same pattern of desperation, even though Khe Sanh is now a largely forgotten sector. In a war that has defied every yardstick of progress, Westmoreland's measurements have diminished his estimates of his foe's capacities to the point of overoptimism...

Knowland, 59, onetime Republican leader of the U.S. Senate, has recently hired more Negro guards. At the same time, he has turned the already imposing Tribune building into something of a fortress. Every employee must show his pass before he can enter; Knowland's own office door is kept locked, and anyone seeking admission is scrutinized through a peephole...
Like the Israelis. Instead, Gorton has talked of pulling Australian troops home and creating a mobile "Israeli-type" citizens' army ready to leap into action anywhere in Southeast Asia on short notice. Washington considers such a "fortress Australia" policy a serious mistake, arguing that it would fail to meet Australia's defense needs while alienating the country's Asian neighbors, who depend on Australia's overseas garrisons, small though they are, to keep order. So far, the fortress concept remains only an idea in Gorton's mind. Washington hopes to convince him that, whatever happens...
