...final ten minutes against the Huskies. RiCapito is a defender; and Ford had decided that the way to beat the Huskies was to hold down the fort, not attack rashly. After a shaky first few minutes the Crimson defense did just that, eventually shutting down the high-powered Connecticut forward line all together in the second half...

Rosalyn steps to the mike and welcomes the Pope to America. It is not a very exciting moment. She talks a lot about "love" and the press pool snickers audibly. The Pope listens thoughtfully--perhaps he is just trying to understand her accent--and then steps forward. He reads his welcoming response. Now the photographers are angry--some idiot had lowered the microphones so they block the Holy Father's face. But at least he's worn his red cape--if he'd been in white the pictures would be horrible...

We needed a formula acknowledging the unity of China, which was the one point on which Taipei and Peking agreed, without giving up our existing relationships. I finally put forward the American position on Taiwan as follows: "The United States acknowledges that all Chinese on either side of the Taiwan Strait maintain there is but one China ... The United States Government does not challenge that position." Chou and I refined the text until at 8:10 a.m., concluding a nearly nonstop session of 24 hours, we had agreed on the main outline...
