...managed to turn out a symphony and a quantity of piano works and chamber music. As a concert pianist, he admires the moderns-Copland, Barber. Prokofiev, Hindemith, Bartok-but he has also recorded all the four-hand piano music of Mozart, with his good friend Composer Lukas Foss. His jazz manner is all his own: a fanciful, highly individualistic style, characterized by kaleidoscopic rhythmic shifts, trip-hammered treble runs and a discreetly swinging left hand punctuated by sudden stops and breaks. He heads a combo that performs occasionally in dedicated jazz rooms, and with famed West Coast Drummer Shelly Manne...

Lettuce Sandwich. Party labels are no guideposts to the spenders. In South Dakota, Ralph Herseth, first Democratic governor in 22 years, quickly tacked another third to the budget increase suggested by outgoing Joe Foss. Contrariwise, Kansas Democrat George Docking has been the only Governor to compile a budget lower than last year's. Such is the changed political climate of South Dakota that even Joe Foss enters the race as an underdog to a Democrat. George McGovern, 35, himself a World War II B-24 pilot with a Distinguished Flying Cross, is a hard worker and a skilled orator, has since his election in 1956 entrenched his position. As governor, Joe Foss, blamed for rising real estate taxes, won 1956 re-election by only 25,000 votes -and the First District does not include his areas of greatest strength. But Foss's greatest handicap this year is the same that got George...
