Scientists are hailing Tiktaalik roseae, or the fossil "fishapod," as evidence of evolution [April 17]. Yet in the same article, they admit that the elongated fin of the fishapod would have been "worse than useless" on land and that the appendage is only "anatomically"--and not functionally--intermediate between lobed fins and legs. The article presented more evidence of the grip that evolution has on scientists than it did for the theory...

Here we go again.  One transitional fossil is found, and presto!--Darwinism is undeniable. Paleontologist Michael Novacek says some people will never be convinced and conveniently ignores the growing noncreationist voices of variance. The fishapod could be a link--or a strange animal. Without a worldwide fossil record of continuous transformation, it is far from a slam dunk for Darwin's theory in action...

...address the scale of the problem. As much as we would like her to, Mother Nature does not negotiate with us. There is nothing we can do about the times she chooses to cause earthquakes. But there is a lot we can do to wean humanity from fossil fuels by generating energy using other technologies. Perhaps they are expensive, but we can't wait for the costs to come down. TIME wants us to believe that Bush is the cause of the impending catastrophe, but the fact is, the Clinton Administration never submitted the Kyoto treaty to the Senate for ratification. Can anyone imagine China, India or any other country renouncing the use of fossil fuels in sufficient quantities to make a difference? Jack Foley Moore, Oklahoma...

...funny thing about houses. People who have the means to commission an architect-designed home might be expected to care about issues other than big floor plans and marble countertops. For instance, they might be expected to care about whether their new place increased our dependence on fossil fuels or used wood from destructively clear-cut forests. And if altruistic motives don't move them much, they certainly might care about the harm to themselves and their families from homebuilding materials that emit toxic chemicals into the air of their nice living rooms. Could it be that one reason those...
