...lead, tying five times and eventually dragging the score to 27-27. Taking advantage of an Eagle kill on the ensuing play, BC’s Brennan Clark then aced her serve and finished the game. “We were up neck-and-neck with them and fought as a team together,” McKinley said. “I’m really proud of our effort tonight. I saw good signals of where we want to be.” —Staff writer Emmett Kistler can be reached at ekistler@fas.harvard.edu...
Livni was born into a extremely nationalist family: Both parents were fighters in the Irgun, the Jewish underground movement that fought the British in Palestine before the founding of Israel, and are thought to be the first couple to marry in the new Israeli state in 1948. Livni served as a lieutenant in the Israeli army and later joined Mossad, working for the intelligence service for several years in the early '80s. She left the service to became a real estate lawyer before dipping into politics in 1999. Following her election to the Knesset, she became a protege of Ariel...
...like the northern province of Diyala. The specter of renewed sectarian strife is also very real: a tenuous truce between Iraq's various communities will be tested early next month, when the U.S. transfers command authority over the so-called Awakening or Sahwa councils (the Sunni tribal groups that fought al-Qaeda) to the predominantly Shi'ite central government. Neither side trusts the other. Tensions between Arabs and Kurds are also on the rise in several northern districts of Iraq, as well as between al-Maliki and his Kurdish coalition partners in Baghdad. ...turns out that John McCain, while crusading against wasteful spending, specifically objected to three earmarks that Sarah Palin requested as mayor of Wasilla, Alaska, including a dubious agricultural-processing facility designed to promote local produce. In fact, Palin has a consistent record of chasing the bacon that McCain has fought for years. She pulled in $27 million in earmarks as mayor, requested $450 million in earmarks as governor and even supported the state's notorious Bridge to Nowhere before she opposed it. There isn't enough lipstick in Alaska to cover all that pork. (See photos of Sarah Palin campaigning...
...debatable exceptions, McCain has abstained from pork for Arizona, and he's been a principled gadfly objecting to the pork-making process. For example, McCain has consistently voted against Army Corps of Engineers water projects, Capitol Hill's most popular form of pork; he and Democrat Russell Feingold have fought a quixotic battle to reform the dysfunctional Corps and the haphazard process by which its projects are funded. McCain has even argued that water pork contributed to the catastrophe of Hurricane Katrina, another argument I have made. But that fealty to principle has required him to vote against funding...
