Ordinarily, a few miscues with a resupply ship would not create such suspense. But a series of foul-ups had left the space station in a precarious state. A resupply mission scheduled for late July had to be canceled for lack of a rocket. And while a previous mission arrived without a hitch, the edibles had mostly disappeared -- looted, say insiders, by underpaid, overworked ground-support technicians...
...toward a dead end. The White House had hoped its decision to consign the fugitives indefinitely to the bleak tent cities at Guantanamo would discourage the balseros from pushing off into the Straits of Florida. But a drop-off during the final weekend in August was caused merely by foul weather; clearing skies and lower waves tempted so many rafters into the water last week that U.S. vessels were again picking up more than 2,000 a day. Though Panama pledged to take some refugees off Washington's hands (temporarily, at U.S. expense) and some other nations might help...
Nevertheless, Carter carefully listed story ideas and faxed some of them off to Sygma. Work did not proceed smoothly. Though it was not his fault, Carter felt guilty when a bureaucratic foul-up caused the cancellation of an interview by a writer from Parade magazine, a Sygma client, with Mandela in Cape Town. Then came an even more unpleasant experience. Sygma told Carter to stay in Cape Town and cover French President Francois Mitterrand's state visit to South Africa. The story was spot news, but according to editors at Sygma's Paris office, Carter shipped his film too late...
...film has its share of scabrous banter -- recombinant four-letter words galore -- but the conceit of Clerks is that foul-mouthed Jersey louts have elaborate vocabularies and pensive personalities. When Randal isn't shocking the frail with a list of porn-movie titles, he is offering such bartender wisdom to Dante as this: "That seems to be the leitmotiv of your life, ever backing down." Insults cascade into insights; obscenity snowballs into philosophy. Keeping the mind alert and the tongue sharp -- for the eloquent jerks in Clerks, that's more than a defense mechanism. It's a vocation...
...Clintons did something wrong, he'll be tarred for partisanship. If he exonerates them, the Administration will crow that even a conservative Republican found the Clintons innocent. "That sounds sensible," says a Republican Senator, "but if Starr slams Clinton, we think the facts will drown out the cries of foul." The Democrats apparently agree. Despite insisting the Clintons are clean -- and thus shouldn't sweat any inquiry -- a growing Democratic chorus is clamoring for Starr's resignation. So are several major media outlets, including the New York Times, which last week concluded that Starr has a "duty" to quit...
