Also in Los Angeles for the foil competition was number one Harvard foil man Phillipe Bennett. Bennett came within an eyelash of making it into the finals, after sweeping through the preliminary rounds with a perfect 8-0 bouting record. In the semi-finals, Bennett ended up in a four-way tie for first (three go up to the finals) and was eliminated because more touches were scored against him than against the other three competitors. However, Bennett had already defeated Jennings twice, and had beaten all of the other people who made the finals at some time...
