Last week Ambassador Grew was again back in Tokyo after four months at home. The America-Japan Society again gave the usual dinner. This time Joseph Grew made a speech which was not only unusual: it was virtually unprecedented in ambassadorial usage. The Ambassador gave his distinguished audience an earful which made many of them wish for deafness. ...flag of Swedish labor, which is Socialist-approached the Royal Palace chanting solemnly, then began to shout "Kallio! Kallio!" Dr. Kallio, often considered dour, suddenly appeared with tears of emotion in his eyes, escorted onto a Palace balcony by the Three Kings and amid deafening cheers the four men linked arms, stood solemnly while the crowd sang the national anthems of their countries and ended with that grand old Lutheran fighting hymn "Vår Gud är oss en väldig borg" (A Mighty Fortress Is Our God). Lalique wanted a larger audience, so he turned to glass, presently managed to reproduce his designs in quantity without lowering their quality. Noteworthy were the four-part molds he devised to permit deeper reliefs, the color effects he achieved by varying the size and shape of one-tone glass. Soon he was designing everything from glass crucifixes to glass radiator caps. "Lalique" became a word for glass at its French best...
