Harvard won from the Newtons on Holmes Field yesterday afternoon by a score of 8 to 2. Wiggin pitched and was very effective, holding the Newtons down to two singles and striking out fourteen men. In the third, fourth, sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth innings the Newtons were unable to get beyond first base, and only three of their men reached third during the entire game. The two runs were scored in the fifth inning when Hubbard, through an error by Soule, reached first, stole second, went to third on a passed ball and came home immediately afterward...

...which our men hit the ball and ran bases. Nineteen hits with a total of twenty-nine bases in six innings is pretty good batting, even off as poor a pitcher as Smith, and yesterday the hits came in at just the right time, and eleven out of the fourteen runs were earned. In the third inning three hits with a total of six, and two steals brought in three earned runs, while in the fourth, eight with a total of twelve, and three more steals, earned six more. And not only did the men hit perfectly freely, but they...

The watermanship of the crew however is by no means weak at the present time...

...said in the way of criticism. The whole game was lifeless, and devoid of interest, and whenever an opportunity was presented to make an error, it was accepted unhesitatingly. Highlands and Bates, on the contrary, pitched well for the greater part of the game, and between them struck out fourteen men. Mason caught Highlands, and for the first time this year, Trafford caught behind the bat. He did not distinguish himself yesterday, and it will take considerable practice to develop him into a really good 'varsity catcher...

...play of '94 was wretched in the extreme. Fourteen errors, all by the infield, is pretty nearly a record, even for a class game, and their batting, with the exception of Mackie's three-bagger, and Hapgood's clean base-hit which followed it, bringing in the only earned run of the game, was woefully weak. In one respect however, they out-played the freshmen, for they put snap and life, even into their errors, while '95, though they played a clean game, did not play with snap, except at the rarest intervals...
