...Thanks in part to the demands of marriage (in 1937 to the historian Douglass Adair Jr.), motherhood and teaching, she stopped publishing but kept on writing. Literary fame meant nothing; her delight was in the solitary pleasure of creation. The 87 poems in 'Ants on the Melon' are a fraction of her oeuvre, which runs into the thousands. Occasional verse for such magazines as the Atlantic and the New Yorker has earned Adair in recent years a coterie of fans (other poets notable among them). One dazzled critic (Eric Ormsby) has called her "the best American poet since Wallace Stevens...

...fundamental change--at the time of the last study, women undergraduates still attended Radcliffe College. It is a grave problem that the impact of the major structural change of the merger between the two colleges in 1977 has not been examined. Another mainstay in Harvard politics is the annoying extensive coverage of a big campus issue which always involves just a minute fraction of the Harvard population but in which everybody and their mother needs to be involved. Last year (although it's been around this year as well), campus politics centered around the Core Curriculum. Students complained, professors complained and even administrators complained. But after everything the Core is still the same stupid and unfulfilling academic requirement. This year the futile debatable issue was the randomization process. Even after everyone stopped whining it still happened. First-years were randomized even...

...Whether Jesus is God or whether he is not God is irrelevant. The "character" Jesus is detailed in the Bible. Even the Old Testament books foreshadow him. Would not the Bible then be the best evidence of him? To scratch out almost all the Gospels and accept only a fraction of them as possibly true is quite puzzling. BRIAN JANZEN Yarrow, British Columbia...
