...normal or abnormal -- are passed from generation to generation essentially unchanged. Now that assumption is being challenged. Last week scientists announced that in people with a form of muscular dystrophy, they had identified a segment of DNA that can lengthen substantially with each succeeding generation. Most disturbing, as the fragment lengthens, the illness becomes more severe. "This is not your garden-variety genetic defect," says Dr. Leon Charash, who chairs the medical advisory committee of the Muscular Dystrophy Association...
...Accompanying the tale were partial transcripts of about a dozen conversations Flowers taped of herself and Clinton over a 14- month period that ended in mid-January 1992. The bit of plastic from Lockerbie perfectly matched part of the timing device from the Togo explosive. The letters MEBO had been imprinted and scratched out on the Togo bomb but were still decipherable. So the timer evidently had been...
...Hatfields and McCoys, of California geography and culture. But the state is dividing and subdividing now along a thousand new fault lines of language and identity. Perhaps anticipating a pattern elsewhere in the world (the former Soviet Union, Eastern Europe, possibly fracturing Canada?), the cultures of California seem to fragment into their constituent parts...
