...Pacific beach near Tijuana, Mexico, Chad Green, a frail but lively three-year-old American boy, was happily digging into the sand last week and laughing at squirrels scampering near by, quite unaware that he is the subject of a dramatic medical and legal controversy. Chad is suffering from leukemia, and an argument is raging over who has the right to decide how he should be treated: his parents, Gerald and Diana Green, or state officials in Massachusetts responding to the advice of doctors...
Rader maintains that he has "a contract [with the church] that protects me no matter who is in power." But who now will protect the church? The founding prophet is aged and frail. Enrollment at its Ambassador College, once 1,120, is collapsing. And a church lawyer claims that tithing has dropped off so sharply among the church's puzzled members that its debts are mounting at a rate of $1 million a week...
...just forces casual listeners to notice these troubles, which they could ignore when they weren't following the plot carefully and just revelled in the glorious music. The music is what we respect Wagner for today; his ill-conceived theories about unity of drama and music, based on very frail analogy to classical Greek tragedy, now find few admirers, especially since he himself failed to apply them carefully. The craft headed for the mainland, but villagers waded into the water and pushed the vessel away from the shore. In desperation, the refugees attempted to negotiate turbulent waters into the mouth of the Trengganu River. Catastrophe struck. The boat hit a sand bar and capsized. A few dozen aboard managed...
...Pope from Eastern Europe. The first from Poland, a nation whose fervor for Roman Catholicism has been unsurpassed for a millennium. The first non-Italian elected since 1522 and thus, in a real sense, the first international Pope to lead a global church. And, in the wake of his frail predecessor, the youngest Pope chosen since 1846. The last under-60 Pope, Pius IX, reigned for 32 years. At age 58, Wojtyla is robust and muscular (he was described in the national daily The Australian as "a man built like a rugby front-row forward"), and it thus seemed possible...
