...master-of-ceremonies at the Christopher Columbus Community Center on Prince Street looked like he was making his last speech and insisted on telling morbid jokes. ("I was in the hospital six weeks, even. With two operations they couldn't kill me.") With the aid of an equally frail assistant, this doddering Johnny Carson finally sputtered Jimmy Carter's name. The President rose to remind 1000 senior citizens that they should be thrilled to be alive and loyal Democrats. He did it brilliantly...

This is a small, frail movie, but it grapples honestly with some archetypal adolescent problems. It also contains some decent comedy involving Clifford's family - his father (Martin Mull) as a harassed hotel manager, his grandmother (Ruth Gordon) as a dotty eccentric. When she listens, she cocks her head, nods emphatically -"Yes, yes, yes!"-leans forward in sympathy, sits back in surprise and pleasure, claps her hands...

...Transit of Venus. Of Grace and Caro's Australia, Hazzard writes: "To appear without gloves, or in other ways suggest the flesh, to so much as show unguarded love, was to be pitchforked into brutish, bottomless Australia, all the way back to primitive man. Refinement was a frail construction continually dashed by waves of a raw, reminding humanity...
