...towns folk tiresomely stock and sappy (the female romantic lead is called "the Romantic Lead"), perhaps for good reason, but with--as some weary old cur might say in the Trib--exceedingly mixed results. The players therefore have burdensome problems of pace and timing thrust on their somewhat frail shoulders, which either Mr. Morey or his director (was there a director?) ought to have lightened. Lovely Susan Schwartz as the Romantic Lead struggles womanfully but neither she nor Mr. Morey (who plays her opposite number--that is, Her Opposite Number) makes out very well...

...after praising the choruses so, I should add that the oratorio has been done better, notably by Paul Callaway at the Washington Cathedral. A sniveling thing to do, perhaps, but it is an important qualification. The Choral Society, for one thing, was too frail when its parts were exposed. Yet what in some ways limited the Glee Club's performance helped in others: at times its resonant sound became dull--particularly in the opening narrative--but elsewhere created awesome solidity. ...mood of liberalism is eddying through the Roman Catholic Church-as the first session of the Second Vatican Council so amply proved. Last week, in the person of a frail, balding octogenarian cardinal and a slim, blond young Swiss priest, the U.S. had the opportunity to hear from two leading proponents of the progressive spirit in Catholicism...

...Heart. Elusive and frail as a sparrow in the hands of any but the most mystically attuned writers and performers, the teen feel has inherited much of its style and sound from rhythm and blues, and much of its spirit from country music. But its creators consider it sharply distinct just the same. Country music, they say, comes from a hard, God-loving life in the sticks. Rhythm and blues comes from the soul. What remains in popular music is mainly the teen feel which, of course, is all heart...
