...Sandy Lake, Manitoba, aged Paul Boychuk, miller, proudly inspected a giant grist-grinder which he had invented many years ago. It included a strange lumber framework, a steam engine, a mighty boulder whirling rapidly in air. As he watched, the revolving stone split into countless fragments. A 150-lb. piece struck Miller Boychuk, killed...
...Mississippi Gambler (Universal). When Showboat was finished, Universal had plenty of material left over?pantalettes, clippings of river scenes, Joseph Schildkraut's southern accent, beaver hats, some expensive Mississippi locations. These fragments are here thrown together on a framework involving the inherent nobility of a gambler who, after winning the parish funds from Colonel Blackburn, falls so much in love with the Colonel's daughter (Joan Bennett) that he lets her win them back again. Silliest shot: Miss Bennett hearing of her father's betrayal...
...rare good shots: newsreel of the actual crowd waiting in Berlin streets to see Richthofen's body carried by. Gold Diggers of Broadway (Warner). Avery Hopwood's comedy about a rich man who tried to save his heir from a chorus girl is the framework of an indifferent screen musical show. As a technical accomplishment, Gold Diggers of Broadway has virtues: it is well-dressed, ambitious, brightly colored, energetic; it has some passable tunes in it, and the chorus dances nicely. It fails because the story-framework is not adequate to the demands made on it. Expert playing...
...jail, torn from his young wife, his little son, caroling to fellow-prisoners about the birds, the springtime. He has accidentally killed a fellow who was making advances to his wife. As soon as he is free a truck hurts Davy Lee and the wandering story that is a framework for his sob is washed out again with a flood of tears. Jolson sings well, although without burnt cork, which he really needs, such ditties as "Little Pal" and an old one, "Back in Your Own Back Yard." The rest of the numbers will need a lot of plugging...
...mind to be free, goes back to tell his wife what he has decided. While he is at home she dies. There are men and women, humor, sadness and struggle in this picture. It misses being a great picture only because its story is not a big enough framework for its implications and because the actors have their own way too much. You feel that it would be better if its workmanship were not so finicky. Half of it is silent and half in dialog. The silent part is the most effective. Best shot: Miss Wood teaching her family...
