...Francesca Annis makes an interestingly brittle Lady Macbeth, but Jon Finch's Macbeth seems to be consumed by tuberculosis. In the climactic battle with Duncan, Finch looks as if he was having some trouble hefting his broadsword. But the supporting cast (Martin Shaw, Terence Bayler, John Stride) is fiery, and Polanski manages most of the violent confrontations with brio...
...most alluring painting, a fresco, is Picro della Francesca's Hercules. The Italians also felt this work quite attractive, for laws were established to prevent taking such masterpieces out of the country, Mrs. Gardner had already bought the giant; it was only a question of getting him to Boston. A dealer got last-minute permission for Hercules' export, and the painted plaster took its place in the Museum's Early Italian Room...
...reconstructing-a-life myth," i. e. Citizen Kane ), and he moves in at the Doctor's place where very strange things start to happen, strange powers begin to exert themselves (i. e. Dracula ). Bauer engages the unsuspecting youth in a lot of bizarre psychosexual games with his wife Francesca. (Adriana Asti), who is voluptuous and ostensibly psychotic. Sontag gives almost everything in clear, stagey medium shots (except for a few subjective long tracks and closeups to get us involved with the younger couple). Instead of succeeding, he confronts an elusive set of surfaces which remain opaque, as in the scene where Francesca hides an orgy with her husband by covering a window...
...adapter, Critic Kenneth Tynan, those characters are a radical departure from tradition. "Usually," says Polanski, "Macbeth is played as an unpleasant bearded chap, Lady Macbeth as a nagging bitch-and both are middle-aged." By contrast, Polanski has given the roles to attractive young unknowns: Jon Finch, 28, and Francesca Annis, 25. The idea is to make them more sympathetic, and to make her power over him more plausible by stressing its sexual basis. Argues Tynan: "This way it's a more fascinating personal story of an ambitious couple, very much in love, in some ways rather vulnerable...
