...workload has become so heavy at United's 140-acre repair center in San Francisco, the largest in the U.S., that the carrier has begun to phase out its lucrative business of providing maintenance for other airlines. Maintenance projects at the base can require up to 100,000 mechanic-hours for the overhaul of a single 747 jumbo jet. "We've added 3,000 people in less than a year," says Joseph O'Gorman, United's senior vice president for maintenance operations, "and we're looking at another 1,000 in the next six months for the care and feeding...
Time was, when you wanted such a meal, you had to go to a fancy restaurant. No longer. In major cities from San Francisco to New Orleans to New York City, home-delivery services are springing up to rush gourmet fare from restaurants to the couch-bound affluent. In addition, many top-of-the-line restaurants are delivering their own plastic-packaged food, largely to combat the still lingering drop in business since the 1987 market crash. As a result, according to the Lempert Report, a food-industry newsletter, U.S. restaurants expect to sell more than $10 billion worth...
...Francisco's Waiters on Wheels service, which opened for business 18 months ago, delivers some 200 meals each night. Most of its customers are two- income families whose idea of a swell evening is dining in front of the VCR. Says the company's president, Constantine Stathopoulos: "It's all about economics and time. We give them more time to relax." Waiters on Wheels usually gets a 20% to 30% discount from the restaurants, then charges clients the regular restaurant prices. Other delivery services make their money directly from the clients, charging a fee of 20% of the menu prices...
...mean, the Rolling Stones have never been on the cover of TIME? Well, they almost were, back in 1972, when their seventh U.S. tour was taking America by storm. Photographer Ken Regan posed the "satanic majesties" of rock backstage in San Francisco and Los Angeles, but the cover did not appear: it was bumped by one on George McGovern taking over the Democratic Party. "I've been waiting 17 years for this cover," chuckled Regan last week, as he arranged the Stones for their portrait, older but still flaunting their stuff...
Unlike the Allied leaders, though, Hitler was fully prepared to back up his policies by force, even if only obliquely or by proxy. When General Francisco Franco launched a military revolt against the Republican government of Spain in 1936, Hitler saw a chance not only to acquire a new ally but also to discomfit the neighboring French. He sent bombers, tanks and "volunteers." Goring used Spain as a training ground for "my young Luftwaffe." Its most notorious action, one that other nations would soon experience, was the aerial destruction of the Basque town of Guernica...
