Scenarist Shrake has provided some good, funky dialogue, and Frawley is a director who gives his actors time and room to move around in their parts. Warren Gates is exemplary as a factory worker enamored of the ancient Greeks ("They went around barefooted, wearing sheets and other comfortable things, and men could love each other and not be ashamed"). Lee Purcell fetching as his wife. Peter Boyle as a preacher with an interest in aeronautics and narcotics, and Ben Johnson as Mean John make a fine couple of Texas crazies...
...Archie Smith as old Captain Shotover (father to Hesione and Ariadne), equal the women in skill, if not charm. Terrence Currier and Bernard Frawley, both excellent in Moon for the Misbegotten, are again assets to the production as the charming prevaricator Hector Hushabye and Ellie Dunn's mild-mannered, yet understanding father Mazzini. Really all the inhabitants of Heartbreak House--except the industrialist who may represent the type that is leading Europe over the brink of disaster--manage to make themselves, as Ellie's father describes them, "very charming people, most advanced, unprejudiced, frank, humane, unconventional, democratic, free-thinking...
...Bernard Frawley and Terrence Currier, playing Phil Hogan and James Tyrone, Jr., respectively, are the mainstays of the production. Both move comfortably in their difficult roles and both deliver their lines beautifully. Frawley is indeed an irascible "ugly little buck goat" of a father with a polished brogue and a fine comic sense. And Currier exudes the actor's charm of James Tyrone through a convincing alcoholic dissipation. The two minor characters, a younger son, Mike Hogan, and a rich Yankee neighbor, Harder are also excellent...
...snippets of news broadcasts, its pastel photography reminiscent of countless TV commercials. Monte Hellman, director of Two-Lane Blacktop, even appears in a cameo role. All this does not amount to much more than another episode of Sunset Strip angst, but there are reassuring indications throughout that Director James Frawley and Scenarist Floyd Mutrux are capable of better work...
