...certain to create a stir. But there is more than mere slander in the Narragansett fracas. The fight between two unscrupulous persons, one, a hot-headed politician, and the other, a person who, many believe, is trying to buy his way into politics, is bound to be no ordinary fray. Each man has demanded the removal of the other, with aspersions on character and integrity freely cast. Each man has defied the other, and each has taken up the other's dare. The courts have reversed the decision of the racing commission, but this made no difference, since neither...
...cuts will be made until after the practice on Monday. Tomorrow a full length closed game will be played in the Stadium between squads picked from the first four teams, and performances in this fray will just about make or break a man footballistically, it is believed...
Franciscan zeal waned; in 1835 there were but 150 Indian converts at Carmel. Uncared for, the San Carlos Mission fell prey to wind and rain, which destroyed its tiled roof, and to weeds which engulfed Fray Junipero's cell and his grave. Appointed Vice-Postulator, or working advocate of the cause, was Franciscan Father Augustine Hobrecht of Santa...
Last Sunday, Fray Junipero's anniversary, the cause was informally opened with mass celebrated at San Carlos Mission by its present pastor, Father Michael O'Connell. Father Augustine spoke on Fray Junipero's holy life, argued his sanctity. A wreath was laid on his refurbished grave by Excelentisima Maria Antonia Field, descendant of California grandees who was given her title in 1931 by King Alfonso XIII for her work in preserving Spanish California's historical buildings and records. Fray Junipero's cell, restored to look as it did when he prayed, read his missal...
