Marcks, seen here through his woodcuts alone, utilizes an almost completely linear approach. The Orpheus and Eurydice series seeks sculptural monumentality through the use of freer, more flexible line than is commonly found in woodcuts. Paradoxically, the "freer" the line attempts to become, the more it appears as the slave of an unconquered medium. Caught between an oddly Germanic type of flowing grace and a more indigenous forcefulness of expression, the product is unresolved. At times, especially in the matter of such problems as the portrayal of facial expressions, Marcks' drawing becomes trivial, often being nothing short of silly. Ironically...
...Patrice came back with her own show looking more like a dish for the gods. The Metropolitan Opera's pinup girl has always cut a lissome figure, and her voice fills with rills and lusty high Fs; away from the mustiness of the Met, on TV she is freer to indulge her self-confessed "innate ham" with quick changes and buoyant tunes. ...laboratory at Livermore, Calif., and Mark M. Mills, physicist and head of the lab's theoretical division. They brought a report of grave but potentially hopeful meaning. In the lab at Livermore, they told the President, scientists have found how to make H-bombs that will be 96% freer from radioactive fallout than the first models. Given more time and more testing, they added, the U.S. could make a truly nonradioactive weapon, "the clean bomb...
