Nearly a decade after an Air France Concorde crashed in Paris, killing 113 people, Continental Airlines and five individuals went on trial on Feb. 2 for manslaughter for their alleged roles in the episode. A French inquiry found that a titanium strip left on the runway by a departing Continental plane pierced one of the Concorde's tires and the rubber debris punctured a fuel tank, causing the aircraft to catch fire. India's answer to that question seems to be slightly different to China's. Just last week, India's Supreme Court ordered French cement firm Lafarge to halt limestone mining in the country's northeast. India's environment watchdog had granted Lafarge permission to mine in forestland there, but critics of the company's operations have alleged that the company misrepresented facts in their application. (Lafarge is due to respond to those allegations in a court hearing next month). Those opposed to the mining project also say that deforestation has led to a severe change in rainfall patterns...

In France, Transparency International has brought a case against three African leaders - Congo's Denis Sassou Nguesso, Equatorial Guinea's Obiang and Bongo's estate in Gabon - claiming they allegedly used public funds to purchase around $200 million in French properties for themselves. A group of Cameroonian nationals based in France has also lodged a lawsuit in Paris accusing Cameroon President Paul Biya of buying French homes worth hundreds of millions of dollars with taxpayer funds.
