...fifth consecutive Formula One Championship in 2003, and the Ducati Desmosedici motorbike that bore Australian Casey Stoner to victory at the 2007 MotoGP World Championship. But television has acquainted us with these streamlined, postmodern missiles; more precious is the chance to see the Fiat that won the 1907 French Grand Prix. Its frame now seems impossibly frail, but in their time, vehicles like this prompted the founder of Futurism, Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, to exult that racing cars were more "beautiful than the Nike of Samothrace...

...none of them could have played the part better than Arnold, 36, does. With slicked-back hair, a gap-toothed smile and an energy that would exhaust most meth addicts, he's become the gadget guy for top New York City chefs, as well as a teacher at the French Culinary Institute. In his Manhattan classroom, he trolls the Web for old medical equipment that he can rig into appliances chefs don't even know they need yet: rotary evaporators, vacuum pumps, thermal circulators. Vale's biggest deal came in October 2006 with its $18 billion purchase--in cash--of Inco, a Canadian firm with nickel assets across North America and as far away as the French territorial island of New Caledonia in the Pacific. The acquisition came just before nickel prices nearly tripled. Inco now accounts for about 40% of Vale's revenues, and gained the company important technology and highly skilled personnel. "It was a major step for us," says Tito Martins, executive director for corporate affairs and energy at Vale. More recently, Vale has made a play for Swiss miner Xstrata...
