Raised in the small (pop. 11,584) North Carolina town of Monroe, where his father was both police and fire chief, Helms retains his country style. His frequent response to an inquiry about how he is doing is "Well enough to take some chicken broth." He stands at 6 ft. 2 in., with a gangly frame that is slightly stoop-shouldered. He walks like a sailor, which he once was, elbows extended and his legs spread as he lopes along. He has a small mouth that gives him a puckish look, even though, at 59, his hair is thinning...

Into this welcoming atmosphere 1½ years ago came Janet Cooke, black, attractive, ambitious and 25. Her academic credentials were impressive, though false; she dressed well and lived well (though later there was talk of checks bouncing). ...more than 1,000 people, invoking Britain's 150-year-old Sus (for suspect) law. The statute allows the police to question and even detain random suspects if there is reason to believe they may be planning to commit a crime. Overuse of the Sus law is a frequent complaint, not only in Brixton but elsewhere in the country. Blacks are twice as likely as whites to be arrested under the law, and black community leaders in Brixton claim that harassment rates run far higher than that. In Brixton, moreover, the law appears to have been used more widely...

Defensive standouts for the Crimson were Maureen Finn, who hustled back to defense and worked well in the corners to check the ball attack, and Laurie Gregg, who also turned away Yale efforts to move the ball forward while intercepting frequent Yale passes...
