NEVER CALL RETREAT, by Bruce Catton. Author Catton manages to milk fresh facts and fresh emotions from the oft-repeated tale of the Civil War's end. The heart of his book is a thorough analysis of what was at stake, morally and economically, at the close of 1864, and a review of the characters of Lincoln and Lee that reaffirms their place among the U.S.'s toughest and most realistic heroes...
...Your honest appraisal of the farm mess and Shuman's efforts to untangle it was a breath of fresh air. We farmers who support the Farm Bureau are tired of being blamed for perpetuating government programs we are fighting to end. RICHARD GUTHRIE Dublin...
...Fresh Recruits. No one on the present White House staff-or possibly in Washington-can match Dick Goodwin's swift facility for custom prose. The men can watch commercial TV but prefer to peer out the portholes at the fish looking in at them. During the flight of Gemini 5, Aquanaut Carpenter even chatted directly with Astronaut Gordon Cooper. In case of emergency, the men could get power and fresh water from a tube linking them to shore, and they could surface in a 14-ft. capsule...
