High culture and low culture come together once again, this time on a giant canvas of JERRY HALL. Painter Lucian Freud, who has turned down offers to paint Queen Elizabeth and Pope John Paul II (and has had one of his pieces sold at auction for $5.8 million), painted the statuesque wife of MICK JAGGER. Best known for disturbing portraits of fleshy naked women, Sigmund's grandson shows the leggy Texan both pregnant and with her then infant son. The paintings will be premiered at London's Tate Gallery on Wednesday...

...achieved the sort of cultural authority enjoyed by Dickens and Tolstoy. For one thing, leisure-time alternatives to reading books increased enormously: movies arrived, as did radio, recorded music, television and, of late, the Internet. These encroachments of mass entertainment--not to mention the march toward subjectivity prompted by Freud--drove writers inward toward personal visions. Literary influence in our century is thus not principally a matter of popular recognition. It refers instead to the authors who managed through their artistry to make themselves heard and remembered amid the surrounding...

Cuthbert's Dr. Rae Duprey rivals Chase for sheer determination. In The Silent Cradle a killer is targeting unborn babies en route to Duprey's San Francisco hospital, sending expectant mothers into trauma and the good doctor into overdrive. Turns out that Duprey's mother died in an ambulance while giving birth to a stillborn baby, leaving behind our neurotic protagonist, whose mantra is "Save the life! Save the life...

Rarely does a century dawn so clearly and cleanly. In 1900 Freud published The Interpretation of Dreams, ending the Victorian era. Her Majesty, as if on cue, died the following January, after a 63-year reign. Her empire included one-quarter of the earth's population, but the Boer War in South Africa was signaling the end of the colonial era. In China, the Boxer Rebellion heralded the awakening of a new giant. In America, cars were replacing horses, 42% of workers were in farming (today it's 2%), and the average life-span was about 50 (today...

...sneak Freudian concepts into the American middle-class mind. Surmising that new parents were not yet ready to hear of their infants' oral, anal and genital stages, Spock simply advised moms and dads not to get alarmed if baby sometimes behaved, well, oddly. He had learned from Freud that repression could produce catastrophic adult neuroses. Better, he advised, to wait things...
