The album crunches into its opening track, "The Best Thing," with a funky ferocity that nevertheless shows off Pierce's soulful voice and harmonics, while "Transatlantic" is a true tear-the-top-off rocker. ...ugly realities of racial politics are flaring up all over again. Rubin Carter, played by Denzel Washington, is a poor black boy made good as a professional boxer, "Hurricane" Carter. As a street urchin growing up in racist New Jersey, he defends a friend against a white pedophile and is unjustly sent to a correction home by a sinister police officer, Depalowski (Dan Hedaya). Escaping from the home, he makes it good as an army officer until Depalowski, hell-bent on persecuting Carter, sends him back to prison. Upon release, he becomes a famous boxer but is framed by Depalowski...

...Jack; kudos also to Jay O. Sanders, for his sensitive portrayal of Dan, and some great scenes with Brown's character Ava. Cody McMains is a delight as Ava's 12-year old, punk-haired boyfriend, and up-and-comer Laurel Holloman matches McTeer's spunk as a close friend of Mary Jo. Director O'Connor had some terrific talent to work with for this film, and gives each one of them a chance to shine-or, in McTeer's case, to sizzle...
