...pour water from a cup onto a scruffy potted plant. This, the first image in Samira Makhmalbaf's The Apple, introduces with poetic clarity the film's strange, true story: of 12-year-old twin girls imprisoned by their father in their Tehran home, away from sunlight, from the friendship of other kids, from the smallest ecstasies and exasperations of childhood. This wise, poignant film was made under unusual circumstances. The father and the girls were persuaded to play themselves, and Makhmalbaf was only 17 when she shot it. After one conversation with Martin in the bathroom about O'Hara's non-existent love life, they become best of friends and O'Hara no longer wants to gain fame by broadcasting his Martian footage. This contrived sense of friendship is highlighted by Daniels's poor performance in making the scene come alive and injecting emotional reality into his character. In another instance...
...while playing a game of Red Light, Green Light on the gravel playground of a Detroit elementary school. They knew each other as rivals from different homerooms--competitors in schoolyard pickup games like juice box football--but when homerooms ended in the fifth grade, this rivalry turned into friendship. Since then it's been happily ever after. "It sounds pathetic," Aaron confesses, "but we do have a lot of the same friends and we hang together. And a lot of times we know the same people but independent of each other...
