...stake on Dec. 3 is the home-field advantage for a possible rematch in the Jan. 20 N.F.C. championship. A Giants victory would force the 49ers to play that game -- assuming contenders like the Chicago Bears and the Washington Redskins do not stage an upset -- in the sometimes frigid, windy confines of Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. The winner goes on to the Super Bowl and will be favored to beat the best the rival American Football Conference can muster. Among the most likely A.F.C. candidates are the Miami Dolphins, the Buffalo Bills and the Los Angeles Raiders...
...July day in Amagansett, N.Y., and the noonday sun glared down at a crowded Long Island beach. Perched atop his observation stand, a bronzed lifeguard, hatless and clad only in abbreviated trunks, kept close watch on the few dozen waders and swimmers braving the still frigid waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Around him, hundreds of sunbathers sprawled on the sand. Some, mostly older, shielded themselves from the sun's fierce rays under broad- brimmed hats and umbrellas. A dog smells their contents and tries frantically to avenge the canine species for centuries of subjugation. Finally exhausted, Leonard draws the vultures of both security and treachery to the tunnel...

But the current thaw prompted the Bush Administration last week to propose a relaxation of export controls on 43 of the 120 types of restricted products. Among them: personal computers, precision machine tools and telecommunications equipment...

Martha is the embodiment of the most basic and unflattering female stereotypes: she is "frigid" and servile, a "mother" to stray animals who is cannot care for herself or control her own destiny. Matthews valiantly tries to infuse her character with a little self-possessed dignity. She has trouble pulling it off, though, because her lines are feeble. "You make me want to laugh...
