...glamour" and uses lots of Lycra and other stretch fabrics in his evening wear. At this week's fashion shows in New York, the relatively unknown Bouwer has scored a coup by persuading the singer, whom he has been dressing ever since he saw her on TV wearing a frock of his that she bought in a store (horrors!), to strut the catwalk for him. "My clothes are not for wallflowers," Bouwer says. "They're for confident, athletic women who enjoy being seen." In return for being all that, Braxton will get to keep her dress...
...Calvin Klein Cut-Out Dress All eyes were on the wedding frock of Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy this year, but this masterpiece by her former boss warrants just as much fanfare. Although minimalism and sensuality are typically fashion's warring cousins, this off-the-shoulder evening gown joins them together in an elegantly peaceful union. True to Klein form with its lean cut and absence of adornment, the shapely dress pays stunning tribute to the female body without a hint of tawdriness. It is everything that evening wear should be--dramatic but not overwhelming...
...HILLARY CLINTON, Washington Post doyenne KATHARINE GRAHAM and about 120 others. "This is one of the nicest British invasions of the White House," said Mrs. Clinton, before departing early. After lunch with George Stephanopoulos, among others, Diana slipped into an ivory lace, beaded backless number--like ELIZABETH DOLE's frock, but with more va-va-va-voom--for the ball. She also danced with OSCAR DE LA RENTA and Calvin Klein. "They decided only married men could dance with the princess, and they had to be taller than she," said designer Bill Blass, who, along with event organizer Ralph Lauren...
...prints all faded to unintelligablity--his widow and the score's composer Legrand remastered "The Umbrellas of Cherbourg" from surviving remnants. How grateful we should all be for the chance to freebase on this pure, unadulterated kitsch, this seven-gun salute to the blonde virgin in a pink frock and matching bow which lives, at some level...
Apart from the singing, acting, and score, Hello Again is a handsome show. Costume designer Jeffrey Scott Burrows, whose recent credits include the SpeakEasy's Twilight of the Golds and Jeffrey, doesn't disappoint in the multi-period aspect of the musical. The Whore's (Carol Stearns) frock, inspired by Toulouse-Lautrec drawings, is surprisingly faithful to the turn of the century seaside bordello aesthetic. Outfits from the '70s shimmer hilariously under a real disco ball, and are, of course, heavy on the polyester and pant leg width. The brainless visual humor some of the costuming is a welcome relief...
