...somewhere around 40,000 B.P. That was about the time when Cro-Magnons, Homo sapiens, reached Ice Age Europe, having migrated from the Middle East. Some experts think the Cro-Magnons brought a weapon that made Neanderthals an evolutionary has-been: a more advanced brain, equipped with a large frontal lobe "wired" for associative thinking. For art, at its root, is association-the power to make one thing stand for and symbolize another, to create the agreements by which some marks on a surface denote, say, an animal, not just to the markmaker but to others...

...portraits are of women, yet it is not surprising that they were done by men. The men are signified by objects such as musical instruments and bottles. None of the women stare out at the viewer. Even Amedeo Modigliani's Portrait of a Girl, which is the only complete frontal portrait in the show, has eyes covered with aquamarine paint, making her eyeslits seem like precious stones. Bosnian army units, some with barely 100 men, began ambushing Serb forces at 16 different locations around the country. ...more specifically black in theme and context than that of, say, his younger contemporary Mark Morris is explicitly white. Like Morris, Jones has a gift for campy comedy and a capacity to shock -- offstage as well as on. Some of his dances feature transvestitism, topless females and full frontal nudity by both sexes. Last summer during a fund- raising performance, Jones dropped his pants and exposed himself while standing near two children. He later apologized to outraged parents, explaining that he was trying to test the boundaries of propriety...

...artist Lorna Simpson, but her installations are equally confrontational. Mixing photographs with short blocks of text and recorded bits of conversation, she focuses on the ways in which black women are treated like objects in everyday language and imagery. In a 1992 piece, Self-Possession, Simpson uses a Polaroid frontal image of a woman's torso dressed in black. Its red-gloved hands frame her abdomen and the words IS 9/10THS OF THE LAW. Simpson has also collaborated with actress Alva Rogers on Places with a Past, a work that combines audiotapes, relics and photographs to evoke the slave trade...
