Some of California's most substantial citizens stood behind two labor petitions that made the biggest news, promised the bitterest November fights. Nominally sponsored by an organization known as the Women of the Pacific, but advertised in a daily front-page box by the potent Los Angeles Times, was a law providing for compulsory incorporation of unions, publicity of union finances, disqualification from union office of all noncitizens (i. e., Maritime Boss Harry Bridges), civil suits against unions for strike damages, jail sentences up to ten years for disobedient union officers. This proposal has a companion piece aimed...

When 150 Rightist bombing planes did not stem the Leftist advance (United Pressman Leon Kay, with the Leftists on the Ebro, reported that within 24 hours they endured 85 Rightist air raids-one about every 29 minutes), Generalissimo Franco hastily shifted effectives from his south to his north front. Meanwhile, he opened the floodgates of all dams on the Noguera Pallaresa and Segre Rivers, northern tributaries of the Ebro. sent a wall of water tearing down into the river which raised it from three to five feet. Rightist Pilot Heraclio Gautier flew over the river to photograph the effects...

...months, the balloon, billowing up in the Teruel-to-the-Mediterranean front, has been in Leftist hands. Last week, unable to stand up under the downpour of shells, bald-domed General Jose Miaja, commander-in-chief on the Leftists' southern front, inched his troops backward, holed up in new trenches dug across the neck of the balloon in the rugged Sierra Espadan Mountains. Against this straightened, bristling front line of barbed wire, concrete machine-gun emplacements running from just northwest of Viver, 34 miles from Valencia on the Teruel-Sagunto road, to the seacoast 30 miles away, the Rightists...

Since his return seven years ago from a varied journalistic career in the Far East, able, intelligent Publicist Sokolsky has become a one-man intellectual front for conservative capital. His principal outlets are a weekly syndicated column which appears on the editorial page of the Republican New York Herald Tribune and a weekly radio program sponsored by the National Association of Manufacturers. According to La Follette-committee evidence, Mr. Sokolsky has received nearly $40,000 in fees...

Changing managers in midseason is no novelty. In the Cubs front office, under the Wrigley regime, it has become a deep-seated habit. Once (in 1925), the Cubs played under three different managers in one season. In 1930, Joe McCarthy (now manager of the New York Yankees) was replaced by Rogers Hornsby in the midst of a pennant tug of war. In 1932 Manager Hornsby (a $250,000 investment) was suddenly supplanted by First Baseman Charlie Grimm. Because Manager Grimm went on to win the pennant in 1932, Owner Wrigley last week had an excellent precedent to follow. Catcher Hartnett...
