...fine partiality and fierce wit at everything from Germany to Radio Moscow and Joe McCarthy, plus sports, doctors, dogs, commercial TV and many of its performers; after a long illness; in London. Cassandra once described Liberace as "this deadly, winking, sniggering, snuggling, chromium-plated, scent-impregnated, luminous, quivering, giggling, fruit-flavoured, mincing, ice-covered heap of mother-love." And thereupon Liberace sued for libel and won a $22,400 judgment...

Died. Hermann Joseph Muller, 76, U.S. geneticist who won the Nobel Prize in 1946 for his 1927 experiments in which he bombarded fruit flies with X rays to produce weird mutations and demonstrated long before the atomic age the effects of radiation on genes, an outspoken scientist, most recently advocating the establishment of artificial insemination banks to store the frozen sperm of gifted men to improve the human race now and in the future; of heart disease; in Indianapolis...

...happened quite accidentally. Dr. Theodosius Dobzhansky, one of the world's foremost genetic researchers, was experimenting with an amber-colored South American fruit fly known as Drosophila paulistorum at Manhattan's Rockefeller University. He was interested in one particular strain of the fly from the Llanos district of Colombia, and he isolated it from other strains in 1958. Five years later he and his assistant, Dr. Olga Pavlovsky, routinely attempted to interbreed the Llanos flies with similar strains and observe the results of the mating...

...group that can reproduce itself. Two species are marked as distinct if mixed members either will not mate or cannot produce fertile male and female offspring. Thus the horse and the donkey are separate species because their issue, the mule, is always sterile. In the case of the fruit flies, the Llanos strain was capable of producing fertile young with other strains in 1958, but when they were remated later, the males of the isolated group could not sire fertile sons with any females except those of their own strain...

...people who have tried mellow yellow do not try it again. The reason is simple: lots of work for little, if any, high. But banana-heads find the craze appealing, largely because of its delicious legality. Already they have taken to wearing T shirts emblazoned with a blue United Fruit Co. seal. Sales of bananas at Harvard Square groceries have tripled in the past week. Highlight of Manhattan's Easter Sunday "bein" in Central Park was a raggle-taggle mob brandishing a giant 3-ft.-long mock banana and chanting "Banana! Banana! Ba-nan-a!" as they snake-danced...
