Governor Robert B. Meyner of New Jersey visited Cambridge yesterday with his pretty wife and a prepared speech. Addressing the Harvard Democratic Leadership Forum, he struck at the large measure of abdication of regulatory authority by the so-called big six Federal commissions--FTC, FCC, FPC, FAA, SEC, and ICC. There are the phony commercials: the foam in the beer glass, which is often really soap suds; the home permanent on the pretty model, often the result of a two-hour session with a hairdresser. Last week, the FTC issued a complaint against Libby-Owens-Ford Glass Co. and General Motors, charging "camera trickery" on commercials, e.g., pictures were taken through open windows that were supposedly taken through clear plate glass. ...fascinating example of how the vanity firms work was provided by New York's Exposition Press, one of the leaders in the field, during FTC hearings two years ago. Up to a point, Exposition-which has since entered into a consent order promising to mend its ways-went through the routine of a regular publishing house. But the difference between what an editor reported to Publisher Edward Uhlan and what Uhlan wrote to the author-in persuading him that it was worth his money to have his book published-was both funny and pathetic.
