...Dunster production. David Alpert gives a skillful and sophisticated performance as the roguish Mike who masterminds the comic scenes. His sidekick, played by Andy Berger, is a lackluster second fiddle. Andrea Gordon as Ruth and Nikki Mintz as Kathy speak their lines self-consciously, sounding unnatural saying "fuck" and "shit"; it's as though the Jackson twins have bedded down with the entire high school football team...

...alliance with the French gendarmerie, where it gets a chance to show what good old American vulgarity can really do. And the film is surprisingly serious about the usually cliched conflict between European urbanity and Doyle's simple "I'm an American and we're the best so fuck you" attitude. He proves his courage, yes, but he also makes a complete fool of himself--and, wonder of wonders in a picture like this--he shows monstrous inefficiency. Very un-American and very unpoheevian-like. He's much more loveable this way, and surrounded by Marseilles's exotic side-streets...
...French Connection. And speaking of Americans, who do we have on the big screen this week but good old Popeye Doyle? Shit fuck shit fuck, screech go the car wheels, bangity-bang go the guns, yessir that lonesome American cowboy Popeye is some fella. William Friedkin is not an untalented director by any means, nor is this really a bad movie, but it opened the door to so many repulsive ones that their grimy taste seems to merge with this in the memory. Gene Hackman's work here, like so much of the rest of it, is very good acting...
...Brighton where you wash off with PhisoHex to stave off V.D. The sex that actually happens (we hear about it through more talk) is uniform, innocuous. No one is tender, no one is embarrassed to talk about how wet somebody's twat is or where are we going to fuck. As a monotone of one lifeless mood, it all rings true. But, one assumes, congressional aides have occasional feelings never seen in Higgins's book...
