...swirl as he tried to keep his old Ford coupe on the drifted Wyoming road. When he was less than a mile from his home near Hillsdale (pop. 125), the car stalled for good. Andy used his head. He got out, dragged a fence post through the snow for fuel. Then he pulled off a hubcap, took it back inside .the car and lighted a little fire...
...airmen will grant an "airplane climbing record" to the Bell X-1, which is hardly an airplane. It might be more accurately described as a winged, piloted rocket. It carries four tons of fuel (alcohol and liquid oxygen) and burns it all in 2½ minutes of full-power flight. With its heavy construction, straight wings and negligible payload, the X-1 is considered a sort of dinosaur among fast-flying aircraft. But it is still useful as a laboratory testing device...
...practice, air friction cannot be ignored. No sizable projectile has ever approached the necessary speed (about five miles a second) which would whirl it around the earth in about 100 minutes. Even the latest rockets do not carry enough fuel to get well above the atmosphere (some 500 miles) and settle into orbits. But atomic-powered rockets might theoretically do it. An atomic rocket motor might be one of the "components" that Forrestal's men are working...
...snare the glider on a pickup line. Both times the glider broke through the icy crust and bogged down in the snow; the pickup line snapped. The glider's crew joined the nine stranded men on the icecap. More food and clothing were dropped, along with heaters, fuel and a collapsible plywood shelter. The shivering airmen burrowed into the snow, rigged a canvas roof overhead as protection against the gale. The days dragged...
Would the new era mean cheaper coal for consumers? There was some doubt; John L. Lewis' miners would have to be taken into account. Due partly to the warm weather, 69 million tons of coal were above ground at last count; in the piles was enough fuel for 45 days' normal consumption. Lewis was reported to be thinking of ordering his miners off on a holiday to cut down the surplus. Thus Lewis would have an easier time next spring if, as expected, he demands a 30-hour week (with 40 hours' pay). The consumer, as usual...
