...McDonnell Douglas MD-11 that went down Wednesday night with 229 passengers and crew: There were no survivors. Among the dead were 137 Americans. Beyond that, details get sketchy: The pilot reported smoke in the cockpit less than an hour after taking off from JFK; the plane dumped fuel over Novia Scotia and seemed to be preparing for an emergency landing at Halifax airport; it plunged into the ocean shortly after 9:30 p.m. EDT. Swissair quickly ruled out the possibility of a terrorist attack...

...insidious threat of waterborne diseases can bring everyday community life to a grinding halt. Imagine communities without chlorination, running water or the fuel to boil drinking water. One in every three people in the developing world drinks from unprotected sources, and every year diarrhea alone kills nearly 3 million children under the age of five, accounting for a quarter of all deaths in this age group. The U.N. Development Programme has been working to develop safe water sources, but the loss of life due to water-related illness continues because of the lack of political will, inadequate institutional structures, poor...

...first unambiguously beautiful bike design represented in this show was the 1915 Iver Johnson, with its arched frame and sculpted fuel tank (a feature that would become a near obsession with bike designers 75 years later). By the '20s and '30s, bike design was part of larger design fields. The 1923 BMW R32, with its clear, lean triangular geometry, is one of the most perfect expressions of Bauhaus sensibility ever devised. There were Art Deco machines too, with swooping exaggerated fenders, such as the early (1922) Megola Sport or the mighty, lumbering 1948 Indian Chief. The BMW and the Indian...

Shahab-3's first flight test wasn't that impressive. The missile blew up after a flying time of 1 min. 40 sec. The CIA doesn't yet know if the explosion was an accident or if the Iranians intentionally detonated the missile after its liquid-fuel rocket finished burning. In either case, Shahab-3 is not much of a threat at present. It is based on a design supplied by North Korea, whose missiles are notoriously inaccurate, and Iran may need an additional two years before it can deploy a rocket reliable enough for military operations. In a region...
