"When Jong Un shook hands with me," Fujimoto writes, "he stared at me with a vicious look. I cannot forget the look in the Prince's eyes: it's as if he was thinking, 'This guy is a despicable Japanese.'" Jong Un, Fujimoto also writes, is "a chip off the old block, a spitting image of his father in terms of face, body shape and personality...

...sons as his successor. (Kim's third son is by a different wife.) By 2007, Jong Un and his older brother Kim Jong Chul were enrolled in a program created specifically for them at Kim Il Sung Military University. Kim is said by his former sushi chef, Kenji Fujimoto, who wrote a memoir of his days in the North, to think that Jong Chul was "soft and effeminate." It may not matter, because the North's generals can run the country regardless of its figurehead...

...Ponyo nicely portrays the agitation of a wife raising two kids (one of them part-piscine) while her husband's away; but for long stretches, when Koichi's life is imperiled by the storm, the movie forgets about him - perhaps because he's doing a bit of illegal whaling. Fujimoto's wife, Gran Mamare, is a magnificent sea goddess, with the perfect posture and forehead jewel of a Bollywood queen, but she doesn't show up till late in the film. Miyazaki also creates a tsunami that, however fantastical and benign he portrays it, can't help recall the fatal...
