Move over, Michael Jordan. The world of fashion design--not sports--is the primary inspiration for the performance-oriented sneaker. First Paul Smith and Jil Sander teamed up with Puma. Then Reebok Classics kicked off a limited-edition trend, signing up Japanese artists such as Imai Toons and Risa Fukui to splash its footwear with Japanimation-inspired graphics. Hot on their heels is Y-3, Yohji Yamamoto's collaboration with Adidas. Fashionistas are scrambling to score their futuristic-looking unisex footwear for fall, including the ski-boot-like creation shown here. These are surely not for the foul line...

Last July, after a leak at a reactor in Fukui prefecture, operators gave 90 visitors a tour outside the plant, even though they hadn't found the source of the leak and didn't know the extent of the damage. Videotapes of another plant accident were tampered with by a plant official. In 1997 managers at another plant in Tokaimura tried to cover up an explosion that left 37 workers contaminated by radiation. The revelation prompted then Prime Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto to declare, "I am so angry, I cannot utter a word." But his apoplexy effected little change...

Earthquake experts now say that the quake in Western Japan is the deadliest to hit that country in 70 years. The death toll has now surpassed 4,000 and hundreds who are still missing are feared dead. By comparison, a 1928 quake in Fukui killed 3,769 people. Today, new fires flared in the city of Kobe as rescuers continued the monumental task of sifting through the wreckage for survivors. Six U.S. Air Force planes delivered 15,000 blankets to Kobe. The Japanese government has allocated $1 billion for earthquake relief and rebuilding. Each family that lost its head...
