Stars from Stuttgart. Cranko's company has chosen to concentrate on three full-length works, The Taming of the Shrew, Romeo and Juliet and Eugene Onegin, all richly staged and costumed and all choreographed by Cranko. He handles large groups of dancers with remarkable dramatic effect. But the Stuttgart Ballet has been devastating audiences all across the U.S. mainly because of the dancing of two new stars, Marcia Haydée and Richard Cragun...
Readers may be surprised to see that this week's BOOKS section contains 70 capsule reviews instead of the usual full-length critiques. The idea was born one day recently when Senior Editor Tim Foote and BOOKS Reviewer George Dickerson were examining the enormous fall list. "Let's do them all," said George, jokingly. "All right, let's," replied Foote, and assigned himself 16 books. Dickerson got 13 and Reviewer Ron Sheppard wound up with twelve; the rest were spread out among 18 other staffers. "There are so many books in the fall," says Foote. "And they...
...over garbage-strewn floors bearing trays of delicacies from some gastronomic apocalypse: a white calf wearing a brass helmet, cows' udders aswim in a mucid green sauce. It is a picnic in the best traditions of ancient Rome and Federico Fellini, designed and executed for Satyricon, his first full-length film in four years. It may be the most glorious bacchanal in the history of the cinema. At its opening last week at the Venice Film Festival, that promise seemed to be fulfilled. The normally reserved press corps gave the film a five-minute ovation, and the first-night...
Transforming Lawrence Durrell's massively complex Alexandria Quartet (Justine, Balthazar, Mountolive and Cled) into a single coherent film is an impossible task. Obviously. Four full-length films could hardly unravel the interlocking time structure and convoluted personal relationships in the four separate but interrelated novels. Thus 20th Century-Fox might have been well-advised to follow the traditional Hollywood practice of isolating a single incident from one of the novels and blowing it up into a complete story for the screen. But fearlessly, the studio resolved to distill the essence of the entire Quartet -carefully constructed around Freud...
...midi-dress and the maxicoat, harem pants and bolero jackets-all are credited to Adolfo. His lace and or gandy blouses, gingham dirndl skirts and big-brimmed straw hats have turned teeny-boppers into minor Elvira Madigans. This spring it was the patchwork look-on full-length skirts and matching shawls-that put new life into quilting bees and earned for Adolfo a Coty Award. Last week he presented his fall collection: jeweled vests with fringe to the floor, blown-up fur berets and scarves, including everyday kerchiefs, monogrammed boas and a nine-foot muffler of patchwork mink...
