...detective, aggravating lackeys with quick come-backs, putting the key questions, and he's just hateful enough to stay really elusive and unknown, in the best tradition committing himself only for the next clue, walking out on Dunaway in the middle of the night. Dunaway herself has never seemed fuller or more powerful. A sense of maturity controls her tension, carries off her partial duplicities. John Huston is also surprisingly good--and better directed, I'd guess--in the dirty old rich man's role...
...North American, too, the reader of sketchy newspaper stories about the internecine strife among Argentine labor's right and left wings, the story of Barrera helps give a fuller understanding of the tensions involved. But the film offers more to the American viewer, an added dimension to which the native Latin American would probably be oblivious. It is the same quality, though more muted, that is so impressive in the vibrant scenes of Brazilian life in Black Orpheus. The Traitors, with its filmed scenes in the crowded neighborhoods of Buenos Aires, captures the struggle of life waged by these impoverished...
...John Dean and H.R. Haldeman discussed retaliating against the Post, perhaps by not renewing the company's broadcasting licenses. Said Nixon: "The Post is going to have damnable, damnable problems out of this one." On Feb. 28 Nixon mentioned the pressure that Charles Colson had attempted to bring on news executives, particularly the TV networks, and observed, "Well, one hell of a lot of people don't give one damn about this issue of suppression...
Applause. In 1970 Lauren Bacall won a Tony for her lead role in this Broadway musical based on the Oscar-winning film, "All About Eve." Bacall repeats her performance for this television adaptation along with another veteran from the Broadway show, Penny Fuller. Bacall plays Margo Channing, a seasoned theater star and Fuller is Eve Harrington, the conniving novice out to win everything Margo has worked so hard to attain, including her fiance and her fame. Probably the best show this week. Ch. 7, 9:00 p.m. 2 hours...
...black professionals held such posts. Government programs that proliferated in the 1960s took many blacks up the job escalator into the middle class in half the usual time. "A new breed of cat was produced, the black technocrat," says Robert Coard, director of an antipoverty agency in Boston. William Fuller, who earned $8,100 a year as a grade-school teacher in Portland, Ore., illustrates how fast a black technocrat can ascend. Between 1967 and 1969 he advanced from a planner for a Model Cities program to executive secretary of the State Intergroup Human Relations Commission (salary...
