...Reagan get his hands on the Supreme Court!" he shouted at the N.A.A.C.P. convention. Appearing at George Washington University last week, Mondale declared, "This election is not about Republicans sending hecklers to my rallies. It is about Jerry Falwell picking Justices for the Supreme Court." (The Fundamentalist preacher had earlier boasted that "we" will get three to five high court appointments.) The line drew a prolonged standing ovation for Mondale and a "We want Fritz" chant from the students. But the Democratic candidate usually makes an issue of the court only before liberal audiences, presumably because he fears it will...

Nonetheless, the troublemaking has continued. Even Libyan and Soviet diplomats have on occasion been harassed by fundamentalist groups, and a number of Western officials and journalists have been kidnaped. (Late last week, Reuters Correspondent Jonathan Wright was released unharmed by unidentified gunmen after being held for 23 days.) All these terrorist incidents, coming at a time when Syria was trying to bring some kind of order to Lebanon, have embarrassed the Damascus government of President Hafez Assad. Just two months ago, 13 of the 71 activists accused of conspiring to overthrow the King were sentenced to death...

While Reagan grappled with such theoretical concepts, it was left to Vice President George Bush to launch a partisan counterattack to Mondale's criticism of the President. Said he: "I would say to Mr. Mondale, 'When you were serving with Jimmy Carter, a Fundamentalist Baptist, a man of deep convictions, I never heard this criticism. I don't recall, Mr. Mondale, your criticizing the National Council of Churches when they involved themselves, usually on the liberal side of most of these concerns.' This is a born-again concern of Mr. Mondale...

...Republican Convention, fundamentalist ministers were conspicuous. There was the letter by Senator Laxalt, suggesting that God wants Americans to vote Republican and that the Christian thing to do is re-elect Ronald Reagan. The President himself suggested as much. It all amounts to saying that what is desirable is the establishment of a Christian religion. What made matters worse was the implicit assertion that these views alone are true and have God's blessing, and that those who oppose them are not just misguided, but sinful, intolerant and unpatriotic as well...
