Avis Hill is lots more interesting. He's preacher, not a pastor or reverend, of some fundamentalist church up in Cabin Creek, and one of the leaders of a group that tried to remove English books from the Kanawha County schools a year ago. The textbooks included short stories by James Baldwin, Allen Ginsberg, Gwendolyn Brooks, other radicals. One of the formative experiences of my life was seeing Avis Hill lead a group of women down a street in Charleston to the building that houses the school board, where they built a pyre of the godless books. Died. Gerald L.K. Smith, 78, self-styled rabble-rouser and proudly bigoted founder of the extreme right-wing Christian Nationalist Crusade; of pneumonia; in Glendale, Calif. A fundamentalist preacher, Smith left his pulpit to work for Louisiana Governor Huey Long, crossing the country to set up Share-Our-Wealth Clubs. After Long's death in 1935, Smith turned far right.
